TITLE: Finance Reporting Accountant

REPORTS TO: Director of Financial Operations

 


JOB GOAL

To assist the Director of Financial Operation in managing the school district’s financial records and other business affairs within the guidelines of good business practices, local, state and federal regulations and laws.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

None

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General ledger monitoring and analysis.
  • Provide technical accounting assistance, including budgeting, transaction review, and fiscal reporting to assigned schools and departments.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of cost analysis reports.
  • Provide backup for all accounting functions.
  • Work with Director of Financial Operations to provide timely, reliable financial data to enhance district planning.
  • Assists in budget development process, including the projection of revenues and expenditures
  • Interacts with District staff to assist schools and departments in monitoring various budgets; initiates budget adjustments as needed
  • Designs financial reports to simplify the budget oversight role for administrators and others 
  • Prepares financial analysis and interprets to staff and others
  • Completes Federal, State, and local fiscal reports as required for reporting and/or reimbursement such as W2, 1099, unemployement and PERS
  • Provides regular reports of revenues and expenditures to school administrators and department heads
  • Analyzes all District support costs made in conjunction with schools and determines an appropriate allocation method
  • Assists in year-end closing process and input of journal entries and budget adjustments
  • Advises District staff on the proper account numbers to be used in various situations based on the MDE State Accounting Manual
  • Work collaboratively with schools and departments in financial and business matters, demonstrate excellent organizational skills as well as skills in written and verbal communication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in school district financial accounting including budget processes; year-end closing; and completion of Federal, State, and local financial reports is highly desirable.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) from four-year college or university in accounting, business administration, or related field; three years in full charge accounting capacity; Experience in finance/accounting 

 

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; assimilate and evaluate data in order to prepare sound recommendations; prepare clear and comprehensive reports; develop computer spreadsheets which provide accurate and meaningful information; and interpret, apply, and explain laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.

 

  • Knowledge of current MDE (K-12) school accounting practices and principles desirable; governmental fund accounting desirable; and modern business office management, practices, and procedures.

 

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and the school board. Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Communicate and work with diverse groups of people

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, bend and sometime lift up to 25 pounds.  Mobility skills are necessary to access a variety of work locations.

 

OTHER SKILLS

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must keep accurate, up-to-date records. Apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
